Second Prize Winner of the 2013 American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, 23-year-old violinist Adam von Housen will be making his Carnegie Hall solo debut this May in Weill Recital Hall. In May 2012, Adam graduated Magna Cum Laude from Kennesaw State University, where he studied with Helen Hwaya Kim and briefly with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra violinist Kenn Wagner. He has also studied chamber music with Allyson Fleck. As a soloist, he was alternate winner of the 2010 Georgia Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) solo strings competition and winner of the 2010 School of Music Concerto Competition, which led to him performing the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the KSU Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared as soloist with the University Philharmonic Orchestra. In the spring of 2011, Adam was selected to perform in the KSU School of Music Honors Recital. In addition to recitals at school, he has been invited to represent KSU in recitals for the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, a concert series in Savannah, GA, and the annual School of Music Scholarship Luncheon. He has performed in solo masterclasses for David Perry, James Ehnes, Yvonne Lam, Sergiu Schwartz, Ayano Ninomiya, and Kurt Sassmannshaus.
As a chamber musician, Adam performed with the KSU String Quartet, which placed first in the 2010 Georgia MTNA chamber music competition. He has collaborated with numerous artists such as tenor Joseph Evans (University of Houston, Moores School of Music faculty), various KSU faculty members, the KSU Dance Company, the KSU Choirs, the KSU Wind Ensemble, and the 2011 and 2012 American Choral Directors State Honor Choirs. Adam recently traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a group of colleagues to perform with concert guitarist Felix Rodriguez. He has performed in chamber music masterclasses for Eighth Blackbird, the Pacifica Quartet, and the Ying Quartet.
Adam has performed in numerous venues including Atlanta Symphony Hall, the Cobb Energy Center, the Alliance Theater, the Savannah Civic Center, and Spivey Hall. With the KSU Symphony Orchestra on a three-concert tour in China, he performed in the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the Xi’an People’s Theater, and the new Xi’an Concert Hall. In addition to having served as concertmaster of the KSU Symphony Orchestra for 4 years, he has also served as Guest Principal 2nd Violin for one concert with the Georgia Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Carroll Symphony Orchestra. During the summer of 2010, Adam served as Principal Violist in the pit orchestra of the world premier production of "I Dream" under the direction of Keith Williams and Grammy-nominated composer and arranger Carl Marsh.
Adam also teaches violin and viola privately. He has coached violin sectionals for the Georgia Youth Symphony Camerata Orchestra and was a chamber ensemble coach for the KSU/Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra Music Clinic from the summer of 2008 through the summer of 2011. At the Music Clinic in 2012, Adam was chosen to perform on the faculty recital. He is an active freelancer and has performed in numerous venues throughout the southeast on violin and viola. Outside of his busy practice, rehearsal, and performance schedule, Adam is currently pursuing his new interests in jazz improvisation, which he studied briefly with KSU professor Tyrone Jackson, and bringing classical music to non-traditional venues such as bars, coffee houses, and cafes. He also recorded with local Atlanta band Nigredo at Doppler Recording Studios.
Adam began violin at the age of 10 in a small elementary school strings class, and he was mainly self taught until his final year of high school, when he studied with Sou-Chun Su, Associate Principal Second Violinist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. While in high school, he received numerous awards, and he served as concertmaster of his school's chamber orchestra. He was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and served as Assistant Principal 2nd violin of the 2006 and 2007 11th-12th All-State Orchestras.
